Wenlin Releases Open Source JavaScript Tool for Web and Mobile App and Developers

La Jolla, California—Wenlin Institute Inc., SPC announces the release of Wenlin CDL JavaScript, bringing Chinese character stroke animations, quizzes, and visualizations to mobile app and website developers. The Wenlin CDL JavaScript website shows tools that easily animate character strokes as well as demos for stroke order quizzing and stroke fanning features. The Wenlin CDL JavaScript library provides utilities for parsing, rendering, and modifying CDL. Wenlin CDL JavaScript rendering works via a JavaScript library that outputs SVG so that CDL can be used to render characters on web, Android, iOS and anywhere that JavaScript and SVG run. The CDL font database contains over 100,000 characters, and there is no limit on the number or complexity of Chinese characters that can be expressed using CDL. The CDL JavaScript library outputs pure SVG path strings providing complete control of every aspect of how CDL characters are used in apps and websites. David Chanin, a key member of the development team, comments: “The CDL JavaScript library makes it possible for the first time ever for web and mobile app developers to easily add character stroke animations and interactive character drawing quizzes to their apps.” Wenlin CDL JavaScript is free for use under the AGPL open source license. Wenlin CDL JavaScript for closed-source projects can be licensed by contacting [email protected]. See our Terms of Service for more information. To get started using Wenlin CDL JavaScript, click here.

Wenlin CDL JavaScript was developed using Wenlin's Character Description Language (CDL), an XML application and standards-based font and encoding technology designed for precise and compact description, rendering, and indexing of all 漢/汉 Han (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese = CJKV) characters, encoded and unencoded. Breaking the 64k glyph barrier, Wenlin CDL technology gives full Unicode 7 CJK support in less than 1.4 megabytes and is resolution independent with handwriting recognition built right into the font. Wenlin CDL is a revolutionary core infrastructure technology that provides a rock-solid framework for data structure, data storage, and data interchange. Expanding the Unicode set infinitely, Wenlin CDL technology reads, writes, and recognizes CJKV faster and more accurately than other technologies allow. It is the next paradigm for CJKV input, indexing, recognition, and output. Wenlin CDL sequences the CJKV genome. To learn more about Wenlin CDL technology, click here.

La Jolla, California— Wenlin Institute Inc. SPC announces the software release of Dr. Axel Schuessler’s ABC Etymological Dictionary of Old Chinese《古代汉语字源字典‧文林电子版》(Wenlin ABC EDOC), a dictionary add-on for Wenlin Software for Learning Chinese 4.3.2 Deluxe Edition (Wénlín Wánzhěngbǎn, 文林 完整版). Fully integrated with Wenlin’s ABC dictionary, the Wenlin ABC EDOC add-on is priced at $59, offered now for only $39 through October 1st, 2016. Wenlin 4.3.1 users will receive a free update to 4.3.2.

Based on the ABC Etymological Dictionary of Old Chinese, part of the University of Hawai’i Press’s highly touted ABC Series, the Wenlin ABC EDOC is the first searchable etymological dictionary of Old Chinese written in digital form, placing primary emphasis on the sounds and meanings of Sinitic roots. Designed for use by nonspecialists and specialists alike, the dictionary is highly accessible, being arranged in alphabetical order and possessed of numerous innovative lexicographical features. Each entry offers one or more possible etymologies as well as reconstructed pronunciations and other relevant data. Words that are morphologically related are grouped together into "word families" that attempt to make explicit the derivational or other etymological processes that relate them. The Wenlin ABC EDOC software edition includes a substantive and significant introduction that outlines the author’s views on the linguistic position of Chinese within Asia and details the phonological and morphological properties, to the degree they are known, of the earliest stages of the Chinese language and its ancestor.

Wenlin app for Chinese language soothes Asia tech woes

Eureka, California — Who knew that making better software for learning Chinese could change the world of Asian computing? In releasing its latest version of educational software, Wenlin Institute unveils a whole new paradigm for handling Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) characters. The long awaited release comes amidst a spike in Chinese language learning programs and a flurry of speculation about the future of the Asian market for computer and smart phone developers. Chief Strategist Elisabeth Nuboer-Ranjan gets right to the point, "The impact of Wenlin's technology on finger-centric devices and OCR tech is going to rock the industry." This is good news for end-users but it may shake things up while developers adjust accordingly.

Wenlin software for learning Chinese version 4.0 includes an innovative core infrastructure technology and authoring tool for input, transmission, and display of new, variant, and rare characters not contained in Unicode. Character Description Language (CDL) emerges as a more compact, efficient, and accurate way of handling Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) characters and data solving a problem OS and small device platform developers hoped would go away. Wenlin CDL handles the 3000 most commonly used characters better than Unicode while expanding the set infinitely to provide a freedom and ease of use the rest of the world takes for granted. Giving end-users access to the CDL technology in version 4 paves the way to a revolution in CJK functionality. "Once end-users start using the CDL authoring tool in version 4.0 we expect our licensing business to expand significantly as the scenarios for a core infrastructure integration become clearer," says VP of Marketing Mark Roble e.

Wenlin means "a gathering of scholars." In keeping with the company name, the lead programmers at Wenlin Institute are both Chinese linguists and computer science engineers. Seeing both sides of the equation allowed Wenlin Institute founder and President Thomas E. Bishop to rediscover the secret Chinese "alphabet" of 36 strokes, solving Unicode's "missing character" problem once and for all. These traditional script elements have been overlooked by software developers until now. "CDL has always been a part of Wenlin, but the underlying language was invisible until Wenlin version 4.0. Now it is possible to view and manipulate the CDL description for any character that can be viewed in the stroking box," notes President Tom Bishop. Honorary members of the Unicode Consortium, Wenlin Institute has been working on bridging the gap in CJK data handling since 2000.

Wenlin version 4 released

Wenlin 4.0 is NOW available. This long awaited upgrade to Wenlin 3.4.1 is available at our web store www.wenlinshangdian.com.

We are particularly excited by the new Character Description Language (CDL) authoring tool. New, variant, and rare characters can now be created, published, and shared with other Wenlin users or CDL friendly devices. We've essentially circumvented Unicode’s limitations and intend to expand the data set infinitely. See below. Other features include:

  • improved ABC Chinese-English dictionary with numerous additions and revisions. Chinese characters are included for all example sentences.
  • New high-quality ABC English-Chinese dictionary edited by John DeFrancis and Zhang Yanyin. (Available as a book from UH Press!)
  • Both Chinese and English entries are marked with grade levels {A}/{B}/{C}/{D}/..., based on graded word lists prepared by PRC specialists in teaching the two languages. Chinese vocabulary grade levels are based on Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), the official test of Chinese proficiency.
  • Wenlin’s Zìdian (dictionary of Chinese characters) has been greatly improved and now includes for the first time a new electronic edition of the 2000 year-old Chinese dictionary, Shuowen Jiezi (created by Richard Cook, including an 11,246-character Seal Script outline font.)
  • Flashcard improvements: support for words rather than only single characters; more flexibility about question types; a documented XML file format that could be shared with other software.
  • For Pinyin transcriptions of common Chinese words (grades A/B/C/D), changes in tone are indicated while preserving the original tone, using either a dot or a line below the vowel.
  • Text with sound: a sample dialog from the John DeFrancis textbook Beginning Chinese is included, with sound recordings for each sentence. Choose Sample Texts from the File menu.
  • Toolbar has new tools, a new appearance, and greater flexibility.
  • Full Unicode Unihan 6.0 support for more than 75,000 Chinese characters.

Contrary to the rest of the world, we are maintaining our old pricing structure.

Wenlin at NCLC 2010

Wenlin will be at the National Chinese Language Conference 2010 in Washington D.C., April 22-24.

If you plan on attending, I hope you will be able to stop by our table (#31) and introduce yourself.

If the prospect of spending 30-45 minutes talking with other users and linguists about your experiences with Wenlin appeals to you, let me know. We will happily provide you a free upgrade to Wenlin 4.0 in thanks.
